Honesdale High School has a strict 90% homework completion policy. In other words, in order to pass the specific quarter, students must have a passing grade AND complete 90% of their homework. I do enforce this policy in my classroom.
The only way a student could make up this homework assignment involves our Wayne County Public Library and their FREE program, Tutor.com. The only things your child needs to access this site are Internet access and a Wayne Country library card. Students log-in, choose their subject, and are able to pose questions to a live tutor (who has had all background checks; as an extra safety precaution, all sessions are taped. In this age, one can never be too careful!). The tutor walks your child through the problem, step-by-step, using an interactive whiteboard. If your child is struggling with a homework problem, this is a great tool to use. I will award 1 point per week (maximum of 10 points) if your child uses this program to ask for help for a mathematics question related to the content discussed in our classroom. In order to receive credit, s/he needs to e-mail me (lockwood.laura@waynehighlands.org) a transcript of the session. **Please note – I will not give credit to multiple students for the same session transcript.
Furthermore, at the end of the quarter, I will add up the total points. They can be used in two different ways. The first, the points (up to 10) can be added to the test grade total. The second, if your child is having trouble with the homework policy, every 5 points can wipe away a homework grade of a zero (for a maximum of two deleted homework grades).
